Captain America: The First Avenger review

Alright, this is the last movie of the phase 1 Avengers series. Captain America, the star spangled super soldier with an epic shield and a gun. One of the only heroes I know who has a gun and USES it. That’s one reason to like him.

This film is about Steve Rogers getting recruited for the super soldier program in World War 2, and taking part in shenanigans to stop the Nazis, specifically, the division called the Hydra, commanded by Red Skull. Red Skull’s Nazis discovered the Tesseract, the power cube thing that becomes the MacGuffin for the Avengers. The Tesseract is an artifact used by the Asgardians from the movie Thor. Hydra has found a way to weaponize it, and Steve Rogers has to stop them.

Chris Evans plays Captain America, and he plays the part perfectly. He starts as this scrawny kid that just wanted to go out there and serve his country. He’s the kind of patriotic not seen too often these days, and he’s just an all around great guy. I like his attitude, and so did Stanley Tucci, and that’s why he was chosen to be Captain America.

I thought the supporting cast did a great job. The characters were memorable, and each one helped progress the story. I liked Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull was enjoyable, and Hayley Atwell as the Captain’s girlfriend was especially good. Mostly because she’s really pretty, and the character she plays is actually well written, unlike some other movies where the love interest isn’t a love interest at all, just a sex object.

Most of the action in this movie is in short montages, but it’s not like Iron Man 2, with only two fight scenes in the whole movie. Here, although sometimes brief, it is shown frequently as it enters the second act of the film. When the scenes are shown, each one progresses the story and the characters further, and it is so fun to watch.

One more thing I liked about the movie is the lighting. I don’t know what it is about the lighting of the movie, but it just sets the feel of it for me. It’s the lighting they use for most World War 2 movies, if you know what I’m talking about. It just helps the feel and the tone of this film. It’s not super flashy comic book colors, it’s just.... different. If you watch it, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

So, time for my final verdict. I absolutely enjoyed this movie. I loved the characters, the story, the visuals, the fights, and, honestly, I can’t say anything bad about it.
