Terror of Mechagodzilla: Countdown to Godzilla's Return #11

Terror of Mechagodzilla is the 15th and final Godzilla movie of the original series. The first English titles were Mechagodzilla’s Counter Attack, and Terror of Godzilla… even though Godzilla has been a hero for quite some time now. Seriously, someone has a big titling problem.

Although I haven’t seen the first Mechagodzilla film, I know what happens. Some aliens try to take over the world using Mechagodzilla, which is just a robot version of Godzilla. Of course, they fail miserably. They’re trying again, with another Mechagodzilla. Why do they want Earth? Because their solar system is on the verge of being sucked into a black hole. That’s actually a pretty good reason other than just being EVIL!!!!!

The problem with their last attack was that MechaG was alone. He couldn’t take on two monsters at once. So, they get the help of a mad scientist who can control a kaiju of his own: Titanosaurus.

He’s a cool looking monster with an odd roar. It sounds like a dolphin getting electrocuted. He doesn’t have any sort of powers, all he can do is punch, and use his finned tail as a fan to create wind storms. I don’t know what was wrong with the suit actor, but Titanosaurus is the gayest monster ever! The way he moves and acts is hilarious! Watch it and you’ll know what I mean.

So this time, Godzilla is on his own. For the past few movies, he’s had a partner to help him. Here, he has to take on his cybernetic counterpart and a mind controlled kaiju. But really, he doesn’t defeat them single handedly, some humans do most of the work. And I have to say, the humans in this movie aren’t as boring or stupid as they were before. The characters are actually interesting. I like the whole backstory of the scientist and his daughter. It’s the first time in a while where I don’t dislike the people.

The only drawback to it is the fact that there isn’t a whole lot of Godzilla screentime until 45 minutes to an hour in. Even then, he doesn’t do much other than buy the good guys some time so they can work out their plan to stop the aliens. But when they get their job done, he finishes off his enemies real quick.

At the end, the aliens are defeated once and for all, and Godzilla swims back out to sea. It actually feels like a victory. This was indeed one of the most interesting story arcs of the Showa era.

Other than improving on the story, the action is fantastic. Mechagodzilla has all kinds of ammunition. Eye lasers, a chest laser, finger missiles, knee missiles, and toe missiles. He has so much fire power, he can set the Godzilla suit on fire. The spikes are set ablaze as he runs from the explosions! There are lots of awesome explosions. Michael Bay would worship this film.

One of the other improvements is the dubbing. It’s so much better than all the previous movies! I think that’s why I was able to take these characters more seriously.

In conclusion, this isn’t a bad finale to the series. After movies like Godzilla’s Revenge, I’m sure everyone was looking for a little break. It would only be 10 years until Godzilla came back to theaters to start of another series. If you can, check this one out. It’s a good one.
