Dracula Untold movie review

If there’s one word to define Dracula from this movie, that word would be…. Overpowered.

This might not be a film that you absolutely need to go see in theaters right now, but if you’re looking for a reason to go (since there hasn’t been anything worthwhile since Guardians of the Galaxy), then this would be it. It was my reason, anyway.

The only reason anyone is going to this movie is to see Dracula kick @$$. Does he, though? On a scale of 1 to 10… 8 trillion. There’s been some great action this year for movies, and this one is no exception. There are only 2 or 3 big fight sequences, but since the movie is only an hour and a half long, there isn’t a tiring length of time between those scenes.

I can’t stress enough how overpowered Dracula is in this movie. Even with his weaknesses, he still destroys all his enemies almost effortlessly. He either summons thousands of bats to sweep the enemy armies off their feet (literally) or he goes down in there and kills them himself. The cinematography of the battles is great, too. There’s one shot- it’s my favorite shot in the entire film- It’s when Dracula stabs a guy with a sword, and the camera zooms in on the blade, and as the guy is falling, you see all the fighting going on in the reflection of the blade! It’s awesome!

In terms of the story… well, it’s just the origins of Dracula. He wants to save his kingdom, so he gets the power of a vampire and… that’s pretty much it. The story is short and simple. There’s nothing wrong with simplicity at all, if done right, and this movie did it well. It wasn’t trying to be a groundbreaking, deep and epic story. It was simply the story of Dracula’s origins with big action scenes. That’s it. And there wasn’t a thing wrong with it.

The only problem I had with the story was the ending. I won’t give it away, if you’re concerned about spoilers for this movie, but it does feel like it’s leading up to something bigger… which may or may not end up happening in a sequel that may or may not be made. Hopefully there is one. I’d like to see where they go with it.

The acting was okay. Luke Evans was a good choice for Dracula, and now I can’t think of anyone else I’d choose for the role. Everyone else was average. The one part that I didn’t get was how nearly everyone in the movie is supposed to be Transylvanian, but the majority have British accents. But that’s just a nitpick.

For the most part, the characters were flat. The only character that develops is Dracula. The others are just there, and they aren’t too memorable.

There isn’t much more to be said. The music was nice in some parts, and once again, the action was the best you’ll see this month. Not a lot going on in the horror department, but I don’t mind. I came to see Dracula kick @$$, and that’s what the movie delivered.

There isn’t anything to really complain about for this one. It’s a decent movie. Check it out if you haven’t been to the theaters since August and want something to break the dullness.
