Deadpool (2016) movie review

I know that by the time I post this review, we’re only a little over two months into 2016… but I genuinely think that this is the best movie to come out so far, and may even be one of the best movies of the year! This is Deadpool!

Deadpool is one of Marvel’s most beloved characters. He’s an anti-hero, the merc with the mouth, and the destroyer of the fourth wall. He is completely aware that he’s a fictional character and rarely takes a single thing seriously. He’s like an R rated Looney Tunes character, if you want to put it like that.

This movie has been in the works for years. The studio, as well as the star, Ryan Reynolds, were going through all these different setbacks and complications and issues, and everyone was wondering if this movie was going to exist at all. But some test footage was leaked online a couple years ago, and fans saw it, loved it, demanded the movie be made, and pretty soon 20th Century Fox gave the greenlight. And now we have our movie.

And it is one of the best movies I’ve seen in theaters.

Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson, a man diagnosed with several different kinds of terminal cancer. He undergoes experimentation under the promise that he’ll be healed and made better than ever, but it turns out that the people operating on him want him as a super slave instead. He’s left scarred and disfigured, and wants to hunt down and kill the people who made him the way he is. He becomes Deadpool, and goes on a spree after the villain, Ajax, played by Ed Skrein.

Wade also wants to erase the fourth wall from existence, make in jokes, deliver meta humor, and be in the most amazing movie that could be made.

There isn’t another word to describe this movie other than… Perfect. It honestly is one of the most perfect movies I’ve seen in my life. It’s a comedy, a romance, a drama, and an action movie, all rolled into one great film! And it’s the balance of all those elements that make Deadpool such a unique experience!

The comedy is unlike anything I’ve seen. It’s the most self-aware, vulgar, profane, crude, rude, and gut-busting humor that could possibly be contained within a film. And when I say ‘self-aware’, I mean that every single person involved with the production knew exactly what this film was and just went with it. Deadpool is also aware of the state of the modern comic book movie genre, how oversaturated it is (especially this year with 6 different superhero films coming out), and other things like that. I myself am not exactly fed up or tired or bored with all the superhero movies, and as long as they’re good, I don’t think I will be. But if you’re one of those people who are getting a bit overwhelmed with the genre, I promise you that Deadpool will be a breath of fresh air.

As I said before, Deadpool is part romance as well, and it is surprisingly romantic! It’s the one aspect that I didn’t expect to go right, and it was genuinely well done! The relationship between Wade and his girlfriend is actually sweet (in its own unique way), and most important of all, believable. It is by far a better love story than Twilight or 50 Shades of Gray. Or most love stories in most films. The drama is also unexpectedly good. Yes, among all this ridiculous humor is a fair deal of serious and dramatic scenes as well. The best part is that they don’t feel out of place, and the difference between the tones didn’t clash.

The action is something else entirely. This is sort of a superhero movie, sure, but Deadpool is an anti-hero, which means he can shoot and slice up his enemies as much as he wants. It gets violent and bloody, and it is glorious! And the special effects are used wisely as well. There isn’t a bunch of CGI bad guy aliens fighting the hero’s CGI stunt double. A lot of the stunts seen on the screen were real. There was obviously a lot of CGI in the film, but it was used in the most necessary places above all else.

But more than anything else about this film, the best part is the title character himself, and more importantly, the actor behind the mask. Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool in the same way that Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man. Reynolds owns this role, and I cannot even begin to fathom anyone else playing a live action version of the character. The supporting cast and characters are fantastic, too. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were great choices of X-Men characters to put alongside the merc with the mouth (yes, this is technically in the same continuity as the X-Men movies). The villain, Ajax, was a great adversary for Deadpool. T.J. Miller was the second funniest person in the film. And Wade Wilson’s girlfriend, played by Morena Baccarin is simply adorable.

One more point I would like to get across is that even though this is a Marvel movie, you should not take your children to see it. It is not for the kids. Deadpool for big boys and girls that are either old enough or mature enough to handle this amount of violence, blood, gore, cursing, sex, and nudity that this film delivers. Oh, yes, there is sex scenes and nudity. This is a Deadpool movie, and without all that glorious sex and cussing and violence, it would not be a Deadpool movie. It needs these things in it because that’s what his whole character is about! There can’t be a PG-13 Deadpool. It would suck! And no amount of petitions by overprotective moms that want to baby-proof the world will change that!

So don’t take your kids to see it… unless you want to pay for the several years of therapy that they’ll most likely need because your dumb ass didn’t pay attention to the R rating.

Side note: The sex scenes in Deadpool are better than the ones in 50 Shades of Gray.

In conclusion, I enjoyed Deadpool a lot more than I’ve enjoyed many, many movies I’ve gone to see in theaters. If you’re a fan of Deadpool, you’ll love it. If you want a different kind of superhero movie, you’ll love it. If you want to take your significant other to see it for Valentine’s Day, please do so! This is a once in a lifetime chance! It’s got everything you could wish for, and I can’t recommend it enough!
