Spectre (2015) movie review

Did the latest 007 installment keep up the amazingness that Skyfall brought to the series in 2012? Well… no.

But that’s not to say this movie isn’t good. There are plenty of things to like about Spectre, yet there are also things I think could have been improved.

The biggest thing that could have been a lot better was the story (don’t worry, there are absolutely no spoilers). The film was advertized as a really personal story to the character James Bond himself, but it didn’t get as personal as I think it had the potential to go. It was so close to reaching the point where this movie would have been great, but it never did.

The movie’s villain was also handled sort of weakly. Christoph Waltz is fantastic in his role as the film’s antagonist, but the big problem was that he wasn’t in the film as much as he should have been. He was severely underused, which was a bit disappointing, but for the times he was on screen, he was good. Other reviews I’ve seen say similar things about both the villain and the story.

But other than those two major things, I still thought that this was a solid James Bond movie. It got its job done. It was entertaining, it had its cool moments, and it still has a fantastic Bond. Daniel Craig is honestly one of the better actors to play the part of 007, and is personally my favorite of all of them.

The other actors in Spectre deliver good performances as well, but the best part of the whole movie is the cinematography. I can’t express how excellent this film looks. It is a beautifully shot film that perfectly frames the action, the scenery, and just makes it look nice even when nothing extremely scenic is going on. And the first shot of the movie is one huge tracking shot, and it looks brilliant. There were definitely cuts in places, but it was put together so seamlessly that you really couldn't tell right away. The aesthetic appeal along with the soundtrack make for an awesome experience.

In conclusion, it really isn’t a bad film. Not in the slightest. It has a few flaws for sure, but I still thoroughly enjoyed Spectre. From a technical aspect, it’s fantastic! And the story, while flawed, once again, is still solid and easy to follow. It’s a good thing to see while still in theaters, so I’d recommend going to see it while you can.
