21 Jump Street (2012) review

The sequel is coming soon, so I said to myself “Why not?” and gave 21 Jump Street a watch. This is my first real attempt at reviewing a comedy, so let’s hope it goes smoothly.

Apparently, this is based off a show with Johnny Depp from the 80’s. I never even heard of it, so I can’t compare. The movie is about two immature, childish cops that go on an undercover mission through high school to stop the spread of some new type of drug. Well, they certainly are imbeciles, so they should fit right in.

What I thought was done well was the fact that the movie knew what it was. They say it about 10 minutes in. “We’re using an old program from the 80’s because nobody has new ideas. Let’s hope nobody notices we’re just rehashing the same thing.” That was pretty clever, and the movie uses it as one of its strengths. It knows that it’s a buddy cop movie, and it makes fun of itself.

It utilizes some good humor for most of the time. There were scenes that made me laugh pretty hard, but some scenes just felt like they were being vulgar just to be vulgar. If done right, that could work, but it felt a little beat down after a while. Other than those parts, the humor worked out alright.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill worked well together, the supporting cast did a good job, and the acting overall was not too bad. Most of them delivered their jokes with good timing and effectiveness.

There were some cool car chases and gunfights that brought a few laughs, like the part where they were in a student driver car being chased by some bikers. That entire scene almost made me crap my pants. So did the final act at Senior Prom. Of course, there was the drug trip scene, which from what I've heard, is accurate to what a real trip is like. The movie is full of ridiculous humor like that. If that's what you're into, then this is your movie.

In conclusion, 21 Jump Street was pretty good. It doesn’t disappoint in the ridiculous, over the top, crazy, insane style of comedy it was going for. If you’re a fan of this type of movie, then go for it. It might not be the funniest ever, but it’s definitely worth a watch. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch the sequel some time this weekend. It looks promising.
