This honestly has to be the best phase 2 Avengers movie yet. ‘Merica!
There are so many elements about this movie that work so well together! The story is great, the characters are awesome, and the action is spectacular! I walked out of this movie feeling completely satisfied. I have absolutely nothing to complain about here. There’s so much to talk about, but if I try, I fear spoiling parts of the movie, so I’ll be extra careful.
This is Captain America’s first movie where he’s in modern times, catching up on all the years he missed, and working with SHIELD. SHIELD and the Captain do have conflicting viewpoints on what’s best for the world, and the process of ensuring freedom and making it a better place to live. This makes for some good character development, not just for the Captain, but for everyone else. Black Widow is better and more relevant than she was in Avengers. She doesn’t feel forced into the movie. Neither does Falcon, who is all sorts of cool.
The rest of the cast did a fantastic job. Robert Redford did well in his role as Alexander Pierce. Samuel L. Jackson is still perfect as Nick Fury, and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier… oh man. That dude is 100% bad@$$. He’s like a video game boss who always annihilates you and keeps you stuck on that level of the game for two years before you actually start figuring out how to hurt him. No special pattern, no quick time event, no nothing. The only way to beat him is to beat him. That’s what everyone tries to do in this movie, and they all fail miserably! He looks intimidating, and fights without mercy. Although, he doesn’t have too much screentime to be considered the main villain. It’s someone else.
Did I mention that the story is great? It seriously is. It’s a lot better than the first Captain America, that’s for sure. The characters move it along nice and easy. I found myself laughing a lot, too. Unlike Iron Man 3 and Thor: the Dark World, the comedy doesn’t interfere with the tone of the movie too much. Just another thing they nailed here.
The action sequences were also vastly improved over the first Captain America. It doesn’t montage through it all like the first one. Instead, we get amazing car chases and street fights. fights on giant helicarriers, fights in elevators, fights EVERYWHERE!!! The way Captain America fights is a lot different than in previous films. It’s choreographed so much better and it’s so much more intense! The fights with the winter Soldier made me tense up every time they swung at each other! Don’t even get me started on his shield! That has to be the best shield in movie history! He does more than just throw it, too! He bashes people in the face with it! Deflects bullets to other guys with it! I can’t describe how awesome his shield is!
I highly recommend this movie. Even if you’re a DC fan, go see it! It’s fun, action packed, and has an great story with great characters. It is the must see movie as of this point in the year.
